Boy, 6, Suspended For Taking Toy Swords to School

March 31, 2005 - 6:27am
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) -- A 6-year-old boy has been suspended for 10 days for bringing toy swords, daggers and a nightstick to his school in James City County.

A teacher at James River Elementary School discovered the plastic weapons Monday morning, says Maj. Stan Stout of the James City County Police Department. No charges will be filed because it's not illegal to have toy weapons.

School officials won't answer any questions about the incident, citing the boy's privacy.

School Board member Mary Minor says their policy follows the statewide code for school systems, and specifically includes toy weapons in the ban.

The policy also says that the school board can decide on other disciplinary action if they believe that "special circumstances exist."
