I did high school news for a small station in return for deejay training, discovered I liked news and never did spin records. My father was really an inspiration to me. When I was a kid he taught me the importance of choosing a profession you can truly enjoy. More recently, in his 70s, he bought a drum kit for himself, which taught me that you're as old as you decide to be.

Favorite Musical Selection (Artist, album, style, genre): Duke Ellington's "Diminuendo & Crescendo in Blue," the original version. Also Paul Hindemith's "Ludas Tonalis." How's that for an acquired taste?

Favorite Books: "Happy Days," by H.L. Mencken. Adam Hall's "Quiller" mysteries.

Favorite Movie: "The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3," the original with Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw.

What in life haven't you done yet that you hope to still accomplish? Get one of my novels published and file my radio stories from Honolulu.

What story have you covered that had the most lasting impact? NO story has lasting impact. The essence of journalism, and of life, is that every issue arises afresh and every battle needs to be fought over and over.

If you could have changed the course of history once, what would it be? The Mongols would have ruled longer! They promoted trade by dealing with highwaymen (law and order) and let people practice their local faiths as long as they accepted Mongol rule (freedom of religion).

If you had a hammer, would you hammer in the morning? Yes. Everything is better in the morning.

The bottle you just rubbed released a genie offering 3 wishes. Quick-what are they? I would give one wish apiece to my wife Marilyn, my son Sean and my daughter Virginia. I don't need any magic just now.

The local native islanders have just declared you their "Lord and Ruler." What's the first official decree? Plump women are beautiful and no fashion magazine may any longer claim otherwise.
