WASHINGTON (AP) - D.C. police will try to reduce violence in the city by buying guns off the street this weekend through an amnesty program.

Police Chief Cathy Lanier says arguments are too often resolved with guns and taking guns out of homes can help save lives.

The gun amnesty program will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. People who turn in weapons will be granted amnesty from any gun possession charges.

The program is open to residents from D.C. and nearby jurisdictions, including Arlington County and Alexandria in Virginia and Maryland's Prince George's and Montgomery counties.

Guns will be accepted at three locations: Shiloh Baptist Church in Northwest, Holy Christian House of Praise in Northeast and Union Temple Baptist Church in Southeast.

The pay scale for guns will range from $10 for a pellet gun to $100 for an assault rifle or semiautomatic pistol.
