Local Rock Station Switches Formats

March 31, 2005 - 7:10am
WASHINGTON (AP) - Rock fans in the nation's capital got quite the shock Wednesday when they tuned their radios to WHFS. The modern rock station now has a Spanish-language format.

It's now known as "El Zol" and features merengue, salsa and other types of dance music.

It's the first spanish-format station in a large city for owner Infinity Broadcasting. The company says it wants to expand into the Spanish market, and that changing the format on WHFS made the most sense based on its ratings.

WHFS also sponsored an annual music festival at RFK Stadium.
