Smoking Ban Expanded in D.C. Restaurants

December 6, 2005 - 4:57pm
WASHINGTON - If you like to have a cigarette after a meal, you may have to venture outside if you are dining in the District.

On a 12-1 vote, the D.C. Council has expanded the city's smoking ban, making it illegal to light up in restaurants. It is supposed to take effect in January of 2007, but there may be a push to move implementation up to next July.

The vote is being hailed by groups like the American Cancer Society and the American Lung Association.

The Council may also consider adding an amendment exempting cigar and hookah bars sought by Councilman Jim Graham.

But Fredrick Harewood, spokeman for the Licensed Beverage Association, says it could drive many nightclubs and bars out of business.

The amendment could be attached to the bill on its second reading as early as Jan. 3.

Citing the economic impact, D.C. Mayor Tony Williams says he hasn't decided whether he'll sign the bill or not.
