WASHINGTON - Soon, there may be a new reason to visit the White House. President Obama wants to set up a farmer's market just outside the grounds.
At a health care forum in the District this week, the President talked about the First Lady, and food!
"You know Michelle set up that garden in the White House," the President said. "One of the things we're trying to do now is to figure out, can we get a little farmer's market outside of the White House -- I'm not going to have all y'all just tromping around -- but right outside the White House."
The President says a market like that would be a win-win.
"It gives suddenly D.C. more access to good, fresh food, but it also is this enormous potential revenue maker for local farmers in the area," he said. "And those kinds of connections can be made all throughout the country and has to be part of how we think about health."
The Obamas' vegetable garden on the South Lawn, planted for the first time this past spring, is the first at the White House in decades. It has space for things like lettuce, peas, rhubarb and herbs, and was created with the intention that the produce would be used in the White House kitchen.
