Fire burns middle school in Waldorf

WALDORF, Md. (AP) — Authorities in Charles County say a fire has burned a number of classroom trailers at a public middle school in Waldorf.

Authorities say the fire at John Hanson Middle School began around 6:15 p.m. Wednesday. Officials say the fire gutted 10 temporary classroom trailers. The main building of the school was not affected.

Lt. Jeff Duer of the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department says 120 firefighters responded to the fire.

There were no reports of injuries. ABC7 reports that about 80 teachers and adult-education students were in one of the buildings when it caught fire.

Katie O’Malley-Simpson, spokeswoman for the Charles County Public Schools, told ABC7, “We are so thankful that no one was hurt, they followed the drill and they didn’t panic.”
