Salmonella risk prompts Eukanuba, Iams dry pet food recalls

WASHINGTON – Procter & Gamble has recalled some of its dry pet food because of a possible salmonella risk.

P&G’s voluntary recall includes certain types of Eukanuba dry dog foods as well as some Iams dry dog and cat foods. Routine testing determined that some products made during a 10-day timeframe had the potential for salmonella contamination, although no cases associated with the recalled items have been reported.

These pet foods, which were distributed in the United States, represent roughly 0.1 percent of annual production, according to a P&G news release.

Salmonella poses a risk to animals eating the products as well as to humans who handle contaminated pet food.

Healthy people infected with salmonella could exhibit symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. In rare cases, salmonella can result in arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms.

Pets with salmonella may seem lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Also, some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain.
