BEDFORD, Va. (AP) — A judge says a bank can’t move the remains of at least 20 people from a cemetery at a former plantation in Bedford County.
Media outlets report that Bedford County Circuit Court Judge James Updike denied the Bank of James’ request to move the remains to another site on Wednesday.
The bank acquired the property in 2009 in a foreclosure. It began proceedings in March to disinter the remains and move them to a nearby church.
A descendant of the former plantation’s owners, David Lowry, challenged the bank’s request.
Lowry says the family is pleased with the decision.
A representative of the bank, Richard Stallings, says the bank isn’t happy with the decision but will follow it.
