Man indicted in fatal shooting of Howard student

WASHINGTON (AP) — A 26-year-old man has been indicted by a grand jury in the fatal shooting of a Howard University student last year.

Rasdavid Lagarde of northeast Washington was arrested last fall in the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Omar Sykes, a senior business marketing major. Sykes was fatally shot on July 4, 2013, as he and a classmate returned from watching the fireworks on the National Mall.

The Washington Post (http://tinyurl.com/pllmajk) reports that a grand jury this week indicted Lagarde on eight counts, including first-degree murder while armed and robbery while armed.

Lagarde has pleaded not guilty. His trial is set for Nov. 10.

Court documents show Lagarde told police he was drunk and broke when he and a friend decided to rob the pair of students.
