National Zoo names two baby animals

WASHINGTON — A sloth bear cub and a seal pup at the National Zoo have new names, the zoo announced.

Born Dec. 29, the sloth bear cub has been named Remi. Her keepers, who are raising her by hand, gave her the moniker. She’s named for REM (rapid eye movement) because of her tendency to sleep with her eyes open when she was at her youngest.

Remi will be on display this summer. Read more about her here.

The gray seal pup named, burn Jan. 21. is named Rona. She’s named for the island of Rona near Scotland and the Isle of Skye. While remote, the area is known for its gray seals.

Rona has started making introductions with the other seals — one at a time.
