WASHINGTON – What does a vibrant school community do when one of its children is wounded by gun violence?
Pitch in and help out.
On Saturday, members of Imagine Southeast Public Charter School held a car wash for Makayla Darden, a third-grader who was wounded last week by stray gunfire. She was shot in the chest as she walked home from her aunt’s apartment complex in the District’s Congress Heights.
“It’s crazy that you can’t walk down the street, or be in a place without something happening,” says Yukia Sheppard, who has two children at Imagine. “God made Makayla strong, and she’s going to fight through this. She’s going to be OK.”
Police have arrested and charged 19-year-old Karie Brown and 21-year-old Demtrius Nathaniel Patten, both of Southeast D.C., with assault with intent to kill.
