WASHINGTON – Break out the shorts and short sleeved shirts. It felt more like the end of June or the beginning of July Monday, with sunny skies and southwesterly winds. Temperatures rose to 89 degrees in Washington.
“It’s absolutely gorgeous. We’re going to be running 20 degrees above where we should be this time of year,” says ABC 7 Meteorologist Chris Naille.
The previous record highs are 92 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, 91 at Dulles International Airport and 90 at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. Those records occurred in 2002.
Naille doubted any weather records would be broken.
“We’re going to come close but I think we’re going to fall short by 4 or 5 degrees,” he says. “We’ll slide back to average temperatures by the middle of the work week.”
It was exceptionally warm from Richmond and D.C. to Philadelphia, New York City and Boston, where the Boston Marathon was run.
In Boston, organizers of the race prepared for a potential medical crisis as 27,000 readied themselves for the race.
This was the forecast for D.C.:
Monday: Mostly sunny and slightly humid
Highs: 83 to 88
Wind: Southwest 10 mph to15 mph
Monday night: Partly cloudy
Lows: 55 to 63
Tuesday: Mostly to partly sunny, breezy
Highs: 72 to 77
Wind: Northwest 10 mph to 20 mph
Wednesday: Mostly cloudy with midday showers possible
Highs: Near 70
Thursday: Partly Cloudy
Highs: Near 70
The warm weather comes after a winter with little precipitation. Since January, the region has seen less than 6 inches of rain and is in a drought.
The next best chance for rain will be the weekend.
