Where is the best pizza in town?
WASHINGTON - The pizza may come out of the oven in the D.C. area, but the winner of WTOP's Best Pizza award reminds locals of New York City.
Ben Yehuda Café & Pizzeria has been crowned WTOP's Best Pizza for 2010, taking home nearly a quarter of the over 10,200 votes.
WTOP's award follows being voted the best pizzeria by the Washington, D.C. Area Kosher Community. They have a wide array of sizes and toppings, and even feature whole wheat pizza.
Owner Scott Schlesinger says all the ingredients are kosher and made from scratch.
"We do the flour, the yeast, everything," Schlesinger says. "We use muenster and mozzarella in a special combination, which gives (the pizza) a really special flavor."
Schlesinger's key to a perfect pie is consistency, a way of life he has followed since his days in the military.
That consistency shows, as multiple patrons raved about the pies when we interviewed them.
"This is like New York style pizza, the big pizza pie with the big slices," says one patron.
"We really appreciate it being in the neighborhood, and it's just a really nice place," says another. "Clean place and the pizza's good."
Upon hearing the big city comparison, Schlesinger took some time to boast.
"We're better than New York," he said.
"Ben Yehuda Pizza in Silver Spring. It's the only place I will go. Friendly service and good eats," writes Judah Kaplan, in an e-mail to WTOP.
Irv Haber agrees. "My favorite is Ben Yehudah's. Great food and service and warm hospitality," he writes.
"I would go so far as to nominate it as the best Pizza on the East Coast of the U.S. I say this as a veteran pizza eater for over 60 years," writes Neil Israel.
Jeff Wieselthier is a Ben Yehuda's fan.
"I've had pizza in almost every state in the U.S. and still think their pizza (especially the veggie pizza) is THE BEST. Taste it and decide for yourselves!"
"The crust is chewy with medium thickness, and the cheese is plentiful and flavorful," says Stuart Cohen.
