Woman, 77, killed by car at bus stop in Wheaton

WASHINGTON – A 77-year-old woman was struck by a car and killed in Wheaton, Md., Thursday afternoon as she waited at a bus stop.

Montgomery County police responded to the intersection of Veirs Mill Road and Ferrara Avenue shortly after 4:30 p.m. for a report of a pedestrian struck.

Police say a preliminary investigation shows Cheryl Denise Green, 56, of Rockville was making a U-turn in her 1996 Explorer SUV when her vehicle may have struck a curb. Police say her vehicle crossed three westbound lanes of Veirs Mill Road, went over the median, then crossed the three eastbound lanes.

Police say the SUV then went over the curb and through a bus shelter, striking Maria Lusminia Colindres, who was sitting on the bus shelter bench.

Colindres, of Silver Spring, was taken to a hospital where she later died.

Green and the three young children who were with her are fine.

The incident is under investigation. Anyone with information should contact police at 240-773-6620 or at the non-emergency number 301-279-8000. Callers may remain anonymous.
