Snow moves to possible showers Tuesday, may be back Friday

WASHINGTON – A wintry mix and snow caused problems in Frederick County and big snowflakes floated through the air Tuesday morning in Loudoun County, but the flakes are expected to give way to possible showers Tuesday afternoon and evening.

A snow emergency in Frederick County, Md., expired in the early afternoon after snow turned to rain in that area. Snow accumulation on the roads prompted the Maryland State Highway Administration to issue the emergency just after 10:30 a.m.

The emergency declaration prohibited drivers from parking on roads and streets that are designated as snow emergency routes.

The morning snow coated the ground in northern Frederick County and in Germantown, Md. But as temperatures rise in the area, Ricketts says, it will switch to rain. And it won’t affect the drive home.

“We’re going to see some rain and that rain will slow down before the rush hour. It’ll clear out of here by 8 p.m. at the latest,” ABC7 meteorologist Lauryn Ricketts says.

The precipitation will be gone for just a couple of days as the week moves forward. The National Weather Service calls for sunny skies Wednesday and Thursday, before Friday likely brings more rain, along with a chance of snow before 1 p.m.

Showers also are possible Saturday, before sunny skies return Sunday.
