Leopold Rejects 'Busy' Children's Mural

January 8, 2008 - 7:40am
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Anne Arundel County Executive John Leopold has rejected a mural planned for an outside wall at the county government building, calling the artwork inappropriate and "too busy to the eye."

The mural is a montage created by a local artist and area children depicting an African American man breaking out of chains. Maryland NAACP President Gerald Stansbury says Leopold's decision is "an affront to the entire community."

Leopold says he had previously agreed to the display based on a mock-up that looked better than the final product.

Leopold says he has offered to mount a single piece of art, instead of a montage, on the wall and put the children's art inside the building. But organizers say fewer people would see the children's art.
