Woman, child burned with acid-like substance

Tuesday - 3/30/2010, 1:08pm  ET

OXON HILL, Md. - A woman and her 3-year-old daughter have been hospitalized after having an acid-like liquid thrown on them, police and fire officials say.

The incident occurred around 7 p.m. Monday in the 1100 block of Kennebec Street in Oxon Hill. It was first believed a woman and man approached the mother and daughter in an apartment complex parking lot, threw acid on them and then fled.

Now Prince George's County Police say it was a "domestic-related attack," and that the couple may not have actually thrown the liquid.

Police are investigating, but have not released the name of a suspect.

Prince George's County Fire and EMS Spokesman Mark Brady says the mother and her child suffered chemical burns on various parts of the front of their bodies from head to toe.

The burns are considered serious but not life-threatening.

Authorities are analyzing the substance to determine exactly what it was.
