UPPER MARLBORO, Md. -- One person is dead in a fire that destroyed a home in Upper Marlboro Tuesday night.

Firefighters tried to enter the burning home in the 10200 block of Old Indian Head Road to search for a trapped person, but unsafe conditions forced them to retreat. The fire had already eaten away half of the one-story, single family home.

The building partially collapsed.

The Prince George's County Fire and EMS Department says a natural gas line broke inside the home as firefighters battled the blaze.

A medical examiner will determine the identity of the person who died in the fire. A 74-year-old lived in the home alone.

The cause and origin of the fire remain under nvestigation. Damage is estimated at $250,000.
