Gunshots, Getaway Close Busy Highway

January 4, 2008 - 2:46pm
WASHINGTON - Police have two suspects in custody for allegedly stealing a sport utility vehicle and trying to ram a Prince George's County police cruiser.

One of those suspects was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The injured suspect is believed to have been shot by a Prince George's County police officer.

Fairfax County Police also have recovered a black Nissan Pathfinder at the center of the Prince George's County investigation.

Initially, Prince George's County Police responded to a call for a stolen vehicle. That was before 8 a.m. at Indian Head Highway and Livingston Road in Oxen Hill. The driver at same point allegedly tried to ram the officer's vehicle and then got out of the car. Police say the suspect approached the officer, who fired at the suspect and then got into a black Nissan Pathfinder.

Police initially said they thought the driver of that SUV was being carjacked and held against his will. Now police believe one of the suspects was pushing the other into the vehicle to get away from police.

The investigation prompted police to close Route 210. Vehicles couldn't access southbound Interstates 495/95 to get to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.

A short time later and across the Potomac River in the Huntington area of Fairfax County, Fairfax County Police were called to the Brookside Motel. That's where they found the gunshot victim and the Pathfinder with the rear driver's side window broken out.

The names of the suspects have not been released.
