Ice rink at National Gallery of Art opens for season

WASHINGTON — It’s a sure sign that winter’s nearly here: people lacing up their ice skates.

And, on its first day open this season, a fair number of folks did just that at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden Ice Rink.

Among the first to hit the ice was Alyssa Sharp, who’s here from Jacksonville, Fla., on business.

“It was a lot of fun,” said Sharp, who was particularly proud of the fact she didn’t fall once. “I was (worried), but I didn’t, so we’re going to cut it there.”

Also giving their ankles a workout were Sean Maloney and Danielle Hughes from Columbus, Ohio.

“It’s just nice to be outside even though it’s getting a little cold,” Maloney said, while Hughes added, “Yeah, it’s nice weather, but it’s still fun to do winter things.”

When told it looked like they knew what they were doing, Maloney said with a laugh, “We used to know what we’re doing. We’re getting back into it, we’ll see.”

The rink, near the corner of Madison Drive NW and 7th Street NW, is open (weather permitting) seven days a week, except on Christmas and New Year’s days, until mid-March.

Admission for a two-hour session is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, students and kids. A $195 season pass is also available. Skate rentals are $3.00 and locker rentals cost 50 cents with a $5 deposit. Lessons are available as well.
