Celebrate National Margarita Day Feb. 22

WASHINGTON — Although there’s still traces of snow on the ground, that won’t stop people from celebrating National Margarita Day Saturday, Feb. 22.

While it’s not exactly clear who invented this tequila based cocktail, it is estimated that it dates back to the 1930s, according to the National Margarita Day website.

And, we can thank restaurateur Mariano Martinez for inventing the frozen margarita machine 40 years ago for his Dallas restaurant.

Martinez retrofitted an old soft-serve machine and used his father’s margarita recipe.

Today, that first margarita machine is in the collection of the National Museum of American History in Washington.

The traditional maragarita is made of tequila, triple sec and lime juice and can be served with or without ice and salt on the rim of the glass.

Overtime, the margarita has evolved into a variety of fruity flavors ranging from strawberry to pomegranate.

So even though the last time you enjoyed one of these popular cocktails may have been on the beach seven months ago, take some time with family and friends to celebrate this nationally recognized day.
