11th St. Bridge could turn from ‘parking lot’ to actual park

WASHINGTON — Tens of thousands of drivers cross the 11th Street Bridge every day, but soon they could be joined by commuters on ziplines.

The artery across the Anacostia River has been under development recently as new spans are constructed. The upstream bridge is to be demolished, and the downstream side is scheduled to be abandoned.

That’s where the D.C. Office of Planning comes into play.

They have proposed alternative uses for the downstream span, including creating a “hub of family-focused active recreation,” including skate parks, a zip line and a performance venue to tie together the walkable space.

This kind of conversion has occurred elsewhere in the U.S. The old Seven Mile Bridge that connects the Florida Keys is now a popular bike and running path, and destination for fishermen.
