$90 million contract for final mile of ICC awarded

WASHINGTON – It took decades of debate to approve and build the Intercounty Connector — and now, just one year after the first portion opened — the highway is set to expand.

The first seven miles of the $2.55 billion roadway opened last February, and another 11 miles of the road opened in November. It currently links the 270/370 corridor and I-95.

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley says the nearly $90 million contract to build one final mile of the road linking it to Route 1 in Laurel has been awarded to Bethesda-based ICC Constructors.

The final segment of the project has always been part of the plan, but significant measures to make it a reality have only recently moved forward.

Design work is already underway and construction is expected to begin later in the spring. The new segment should be ready for drivers by late next year or or early 2014.
