WASHINGTON – All lanes have reopened on the Inner Loop of the Beltway near the Springfield Interchange after a truck knocked parts of an overhead sign onto the roadway Wednesday morning, shutting down that segment.
A dump truck with its bed up on the Inner Loop struck the sign some time after 9:30 a.m., WTOP Traffic reported, knocking down pieces of it just before the interchange near Interstate 395, also called the Mixing Bowl.
Crews removed additional parts of the sign, a spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Transportation says, while the truck remained in the left shoulder. Parts of the sign or its structure were knocked off.
All lanes were originally closed.
“It’s very unusual to find a near-total closure of a major roadway due to something other than a serious crash,” said WTOP Traffic’s Tim Bracken. “Luckily, we’re outside of the morning rush hour, so delays haven’t been too painful.”
