LAUREL, Md. — Hate speed cameras? One very busy camera just went away.
The camera set up along the InterCounty Connector work zone on Interstate 95 between MD-198 and MD-212 has been removed because work on the ICC is wrapping up. Maryland law allows speed cameras to be placed along active highway work zones.
This mobile camera was a pretty busy one. It was responsible for snapping over 22,000 citations since it was set up in 2009. Drivers who are caught going 12 MPH or more over the posted speed limit in Maryland work zones are issued a $40 fine.
“It is worth noting the camera will return next spring when the contracts to extend the ICC to Route 1 begins,” writes State Highway Administration spokesperson Dave Buck.
Drivers may still see signs warning about the camera, but the highway administration says those signs are expected to come down soon as other ICC-related construction signs come down.
