Thoughts on where the FBI should go? Now’s your chance to sound off

Residents and other interested groups will get the chance to sound off on the best spot for a new FBI headquarters as federal officials try to narrow the scope from three potential locations in Maryland and Virginia.

The General Services Administration has scheduled a series of meetings to be held over the next month, starting with a hearing near the potential site in Springfield on Sept. 22. The GSA is trying to gather feedback for an Environmental Impact Statement assessing each of the sites, and that study will inform the agency in ruling in, or out, the potential locations.

The GSA, the federal government’s real estate arm, announced the three sites last month. In addition to the Springfield site, a GSA storage facility, the other two are by the Greenbelt Metro and at the former Landover Mall.

The GSA and FBI are seeking alternatives to the FBI’s current home in the J. Edgar Hoover building at 935 Pennsylvania Ave. NW in the District, which it has outgrown and been forced to lease additional space in other locations. About 52 percent of the agency’s headquarters staff work from J. Edgar Hoover, which would potentially be swapped with developers in return for a new headquarters of about 2.1 million square feet.

The proposed schedule is as follows:

  • Springfield site: Sept. 22, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Robert E. Lee High School, main lobby, 6540 Franconia Road, Springfield;
  • Greenbelt site: Sept. 23, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Greenbelt Branch Library auditorium, 11 Crescent Road, Greenbelt;
  • Current FBI site: Oct. 1, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., District Architecture Center, Hickok Cole Room, 421 7th St. NW;
  • Landover site: Oct. 2, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex, Town Hall, 8001 Sheriff Road, Landover.
