Keep your socks on and other job interview tips

WASHINGTON – In this difficult economy, competition is high for jobs.

Apparently, the added stress and pressure is too much for some to handle.

The strange things that are happening during job interviews go beyond simply flubbing the usual, “What will you bring to the company?”

Thomas Net News compiled a list of things to avoid doing at all costs during a job interview:

  • Be overly committed and threatening – One interviewee handcuffed himself to the desk during the interview, while another job prospect challenged his interviewer to arm-wrestle.
  • Don’t dress for the occasion – One job seeker wore a cowboy hat and refused to take it off and another forgot dark socks to wear under his suit, so he colored his ankles with a felt-tip marker.
  • Feel right at home – One applicant removed her socks and placed them on her interviewer’s desk because she was too hot, while another candidate fell asleep during the interview.
  • Involve parents, siblings and spouses – One candidate sent his sister to interview in his place, while another job seeker’s mother called the employer to find out why her son wasn’t hired.
  • Get angry – One job seeker was rushing to the interview and flipped off another driver, who ignored her. The job seeker then honked and swore at the other driver. When she later walked into her interview, she found the other driver was the one interviewing her for the position.
  • Involve pets – One applicant came in for an interview with a cockatoo on his shoulder, while another candidate said he would accept the job if he could bring his pet monkey to work.
  • Be honest to a fault – One applicant told the hiring manager all of the reasons he shouldn’t be hired, while another said she would prefer a job with the company’s competitor.
  • Get uncomfortably personal – One candidate talked about how an affair cost him a previous job, while another asked the interviewer for a ride home after the interview.
  • Try to get a date out of it – One candidate asked if the interviewer wanted to meet for a drink, while another cited the company’s hot women as a reason he wanted to work there.
  • Leave a little bit of yourself behind – One candidate filed her fingernails during the interview, while another blew his nose and lined up the used tissues on the table.
