ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- The woman accused of kidnapping a 5-year-old boy from an Alexandria shopping center plans to mount an insanity defense, according to court documents obtained by WTOP.

Falah Octavia Joe is charged with kidnapping of Kamron Wells from the Plaza at Landmark shopping center in October. During a previous court hearing, Joe claimed the boy was outside in the cold by himself.

Federal public defender, Geremy C. Kamens, entered the intent to seek an insanity defense in court on Nov. 28.

In responding to the insanity defense, Assistant U.S. Attorney Rebeca H. Bellows has asked Judge Liam O'Grady to order Joe to undergo a psychiatric exam and to release her medical records.

Should O'Grady approve the exam, prosecutors want Joe committed to a federal facility in North Carolina for up to 45 days.
