Montgomery County Police have identified the woman killed in the accident as 69-year-old Ketty Emilce Alvarado.
Police Cpl. Sonya Pruitt says police have little to go on at this point.
"We do not have a good description of the striking vehicle, however we do have an interest in a white box truck with tandem wheels in the back," Pruitt says.
Alvarado and her husband were walking together near the intersection of Crabbs Branch Way and Redland Road. The light at the eastbound intersection of Redland Road was red and Alvarado and her husband began to cross the street when she was hit around 5:50 a.m., police say.
Police say it's possible Alvarado became entangled with the truck, then eventually became dislodged -- but the driver didn't stop. Police say she may have been run over again.
Alvarado's husband was not aware that his wife had been struck. Two citizens approached him with his wife's purse. Not knowing where she had gone, he returned home and police were contacted.
Police are hoping to speak to any motorists who were in the area of East Gude Drive, Crabbs Branch Way, and Redland Road just before 6 a.m.
Detectives would also like to talk with two good Samaritans who returned the Alvarado's purse to her husband.
Alvarado lived on Crabbs Branch Way, police say.
Anyone with information about the deadly accident is asked to call police at 301-279-8000.
