Gaithersburg Officer Shoots Armed Robbery Suspect

September 10, 2006 - 3:14pm
GAITHERSBURG, Md. - Montgomery County Police are investigating the armed robbery and shooting of a suspect on Saturday night in Gaithersburg.

Officers from the City of Gaithersburg Police Department responded to a call for a suspicious person at a Subway restaurant at 351 Kentlands Boulevard.

Montgomery County Police say a witness called police after watching the suspect, 22-year-old Jamie Cowger Denzel of Gaithersburg, cover his license plate with duct tape before entering the store.

Police also say, through the course of an investigation, Denzel entered the restaurant, ate and then passed a note to the manager announcing that he had a weapon.

Police say Denzel was given an undisclosed amount of cash, and also cash from an employee and personal property from an employee.

A responding officer from the Gaithersburg City Police department arrived on the scene and encountered Denzel as he was leaving the business.

Police say the officer deployed a taser and then shot the Denzel once. The shooting is still under investigation.

Denzel is being treated for a non-life threatening wound at a local hospital.

Police say they have a warrant for his arrest and will serve it pending the completion of his medical treatment.
