WASHINGTON - Metro will hire 20 new police officers thanks to a $9.5 million federal grant to fight terrorism.

"We'll look to implement new technologies to prevent and identify threats related to terrorism," says Metro Police Chief Michael Taborn.

The officers will provide a higher visibility of uniformed officers along the transit system.

"They won't work behind the scenes."

The officers will undergo 10 months of training, plus 10 weeks of field training before they are visible along the subway system.

Metro also has received nearly $2 million from the Homeland Security Department to expand its chemical detection program at stations and upgrade radio communications in tunnels located in Prince George's County.
