Unexpected voice supports District voting rights

June 19, 2009 - 3:23pm
WASHINGTON - A major figure in the Republican Party said Friday he is willing to put a D.C. license plate on his vehicle that says "Taxation Without Representation."

Appearing on WTOP's "Politics Program With Mark Plotkin," Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele said he believes President Barack Obama should put a "Taxation Without Representation" license plate on his presidential limousine to show his support for D.C. voting rights.

When asked if he would consider putting such a plate on his vehicle, Steele said "absolutely."

"It would be a great symbol, I have no problem with that at all."

Steele is not a District of Columbia resident, but said the Ford Explorer he uses is registered in D.C.

The D.C. Republican Party today issued a statement praising Steele for his commitment to the "Taxation Without Representation" license plate.

"Chairman Steele doesn't just talk a good game but he enthusiastically believes in D.C. voting rights," said Robert J. Kabel, chairman of the D.C. Republican Committee.

Obama's limo currently has D.C. plates that do not have the protest statement. Former President George W. Bush did not have the "Taxation Without Representation" plate either. However, former President Bill Clinton did have the protest plate.
