WASHINGTON - D.C. will participate in a privately-funded crime fighting effort called Safe City.
Funded by Target and Sprint Nextel, the program includes the installation of nearly 30 video cameras on street corners in D.C.'s Ward 5 Trinidad neighbothood.
The new system allows police to monitor multiple cameras in real time.
The first wave of cameras will be installed in May.
The city already has 94 closed circuit TV cameras.
Other cities involved in Safe City are Baltimore, Denver, Boston and Compton, Calif.
