WASHINGTON - A hand grenade found in Rock Creek Park near Carter Barron Amphitheatre is not a live explosive.

The grenade was discovered on U.S. Park Service property in Rock Creek Park, near the Fitzgerald Tennis Center and an Egyptian Embassy office on Wednesday morning.

U.S. Park Police spokesman Sgt. Robert Lachance says a maintenance worker found the explosive in a plastic garbage bag near a fence on a playing field.

The grenade appeared to be live, so Park Police called the military to remove and examine the device, Lachance says.

Several homes - including the building that houses the Egyptian Embassy office - were evacuated while the military removed the device.

Officials closed 16th Street in Northwest for two hours while they investigated. There were no injuries.
