Elderly Couple Dies in Northwest House Fire

December 24, 2007 - 4:35pm
WASHINGTON - An 88-year-old man and his 80-year-old wife died after a fire in Northwest Monday morning.

They have been identified as George and Gisela O'Keefe.

D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Alan Etter says the fire occurred in the basement of their two-story house in the 3100 block of Oliver Street. He says it appears that the house had no working smoke alarms.

Etter says the couple were longtime residents of the neighborhood.

Family members told authorities that George was a retired marine, while Gisela was a part-time school librarian.
