Wizards Donate $20K to Burn Victim

December 5, 2007 - 8:46am
WASHINGTON (AP) - Wizards players are donating $20,000 to a woman whose former boyfriend doused her with gasoline and set her on fire.

The team will present Patricia Scales with a check at their game Wednesday against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Scales was burned over 40 percent of her body. A Maryland-based mortgage company is offering her the free use of a five-bedroom house during her recovery, but the company can no longer maintain its promise, and Scales and her family must move.

The team's contribution will help Scales pay rent on a three-bedroom government-subsidized apartment in Southeast. She'll move in this month.

Scales, 46, was attacked Dec. 16 when her ex-boyfriend went to her Southeast Washington apartment in a jealous rage. Terrance James, 48, was sentenced in August to a 25-year prison term.
