1 Woman Dead After Fire in Senior Citizens Apt. Building

January 4, 2007 - 5:59am
WASHINGTON - One woman is dead after an early morning high rise fire at a senior citizens apartment building in Northwest.

The two-alarm fire started around 2:30 a.m. on the 10th floor in the apartment of the woman who died. The woman was found unconscious in her apartment doorway. She was pronounced dead at Washington Hospital Center. A second woman was taken to George Washington University Hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

ABC-7 reports two police officers saw the fire and ran into Golden Rule Apartments at 901 New Jersey Avenue.

The officers went door-to-door helping evacuate people from the ninth and tenth floors.

Fire officials say there was some type of explosion, but they're still investigating the cause of the fire.

Some people on the lower floors have been able to return to their apartments, although a number of people are still displaced.
