MGM Casino construction traffic changes irk neighbors

The cheering section for the MGM Casino at National Harbor is large. Prince George’s County planners are all for it. County politicians laud it as an area crown jewel on par with the Capital Wheel. And casino operators are promising thousands of jobs when the facility opens. Just one group, it seems, is less than thrilled with the pending work on the gaming emporium: the neighbors in whose backyard it will sit.

Changes in the traffic pattern of roads near the construction site have arrived unannounced, The Gazette reports, making residents feel marginalized and out of the communication loop. They complain there was no warning of the changes on the State Highway Administration’s website, and there is no estimate of how much construction traffic will move through the community or how much disruption it will cause.

To accommodate casino construction, National Avenue and Harborview Avenue will be converted for the next two years from two-way, four-lane roads to two-lane, one-way roads.
