UPPER MARLBORO, Md. – More than half of Prince George’s County residents leave the county to get to work, a new study finds.
“We have a ton of federal workers. Sixty percent of our folks go out of the county to work and most of those are in federal agencies,” says Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker tells WTOP.
“I think in Prince George’s County we’ve been slow to the game.”
“If you look at the places where we’ve seen tremendous growth in the Washington region, they’ve been around Metro sites. They haven’t been in Prince George’s County,” Baker says.
Baker, who will be a guest at 10 a.m. on The Politics Program with Mark Plotkin, says he’s committed to bringing federal agencies to the New Carrollton Metro station or other underdeveloped Metro stops.
“This is not only good for economic development, this is smart growth. This is transit-oriented development in the green economy. We’re keeping cars off the street,” Baker says.
Baker said he’s working on providing more incentives to businesses to come to Prince George’s County, and says he hopes defense contractors will relocate here to be closer to the federal enclave.
