Md. 3 reopens after tanker truck crash

BOWIE, Md. – Md. 3 has completely reopened after a crash involving an 18-wheel tanker truck hauling 9,000 gallons of gasoline, a box truck and a car.

The crash shut down Md. 3 between U.S. 50 and Md. 450 around 9:30 p.m. Monday. The northbound lanes, the last to reopen, opened around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Police are still investigating what happened.

The tanker landed in the median strip of Md. 3 just south of Md. 450.

Firefighters had to contain a small amount of gas that leaked. They managed to keep it from storm drains. In total, about 100 gallons of fuel spilled.

The tanker truck’s driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital. He’s in good condition. The other drivers declined treatment.

During the closure, drivers used Md. 424/Davidsonville Road as an alternative route.
