Joan Lunden diagnosed with breast cancer

WASHINGTON — A former, long-time co-host of “Good Morning America” has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Joan Lunden, who co-anchored the show from from 1980 through 1997, announced her diagnosis on the show Tuesday morning.

The former host and author of eight books learned of the disease after her yearly mammogram.

“The words are almost surreal when you learn you have breast cancer,” Lunden says.

Lunden, who is health conscious, says she’s learning as much as she can about cancer and has gone “into warrior mode.”

“You can’t be afraid of what you might hear,” she says.

The 63-year-old is already undergoing chemotherapy.

She tells GMA’s Robin Roberts, who also has been treated for breast cancer recently, that her husband and seven children have been by her side throughout the process.
