3 in hospital after Md. apartment fire

WASHINGTON — Three people are in the hospital after an apartment fire in Derwood Tuesday morning.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer says the blaze started around 1 a.m. on the ground level at the Mallard Cove Apartments, along Needwood Road.

One man has serious, possibly maybe life-threatening injuries, Piringer says. Another man in his 50s suffered chest pains, but is expected to be okay. A firefighter also hurt her elbow.

Piringer says 12 families have been displaced; the Red Cross is assisting them. Investigators are still on the scene trying to figure out what caused the blaze.
