Police say a Virginia man who met a woman at a Bethesda bar knew he had HIV and didn’t tell her as they had unprotected sex seven times over a weekend in July.
Daniel Cleaves, 28, of Richmond is now facing seven counts of the rarely used charge of transferring HIV to another.
According to Fox 5, the victim told police Cleaves never offered or asked to use a condom from July 26-July 28. The victim told police she found medical tests in Cleaves’ backpack that showed he was HIV-positive.
According to charging documents, Cleaves admitted to the victim that he knew he had HIV and apologized for not telling her through a text message conversation. A warrant for Cleaves’ arrest was issued on Sept. 22. According to Fox 5, he was arrested last week, posted bond and is waiting for a court date.
A person convicted in Maryland of knowingly transferring or attempting to transfer HIV is guilty of a misdemeanor and faces up to three years in prison, a fine of up to $2,500 or both.
