California Tortilla Fundraising To End Child Hunger

California Tortilla on Cordell Avenue (file photo)Local burrito chain California Tortilla is teaming up with nonprofit Share Our Strength to raise money for the group’s “No Kid Hungry” campaign.

Starting Sunday, the Rockville-based chain with its flagship location in Bethesda will donate $1 for every “Fresh Deal” sold. All customers need to do is upgrade their meal to a “Fresh Deal,” which typically means another $2.99 and includes a drink and any side or dessert with an entree.

No Kid Hungry aims to raise money for Share Our Strength’s educational and meal initiatives. The group connects kids whose families struggle to afford well-rounded meals to school breakfast and summer meal programs. It also hosts classes for families on how to find and prepare affordable, nutritious meals.

California Tortilla says it has donated $100,000 to the program since its partnership began a few years ago.

The fast casual chain’s first store opened in 1995 on Cordell Avenue, before co-founders Alan Cohen and Pam Felix sold it in 2003 to allow for a rapid expansion throughout the mid-Atlantic.
