Md. man drowns in Assateague surf

ASSATEAGUE, Md. (AP) — Park authorities say a beachgoer has drowned after going for a late-night swim at the Assateague Island National Seashore.

Liz Davis, a spokeswoman for the national park, says 28-year-old Oniruddo Paul Somroy of Rockville was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital early Sunday morning.

The Daily Times of Salisbury reports (http://delmarvane.ws/1srr774 ) that Somroy had been on the beach with a friend when he decided to go for a swim at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

He soon began to struggle, and the friend lost contact with him.

The friend called 911, and park rangers searching for Somroy found him in the surf about an hour after he went missing.

Davis said the investigation remains open.
