CDC Says Virus That Causes Smallpox Found In NIH Building – Vials of a virus that causes smallpox were found in a cardboard box in a cold storage room at NIH in Bethesda. NIH notified the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the discovery on July 1. The CDC then transported the vials to Atlanta and tested the material. The boxes holding the vials might date back to the 1950s, according to the CDC. Officials from the FDA suspect the box got left behind before the agency took over the regulation of vaccines from NIH abotu 40 years ago. [ABC News]
Education Groups Against Moving School After Labor Day – The Maryland State Education Association, Public Schools Superintendents Association of Maryland and Maryland Association of Boards of Education sent a letter to Gov. Martin O’Malley arguing against a task forces’s recommendation to move the first day of public school after Labor Day. In the letter, the groups argue a later start would mean the loss of local authority and negatively affect teacher training and preparation for standardized testing. [Washington Post]
