World Cup Specials, Places To Watch In Bethesda

Toasted bread, shrimp, salsa verde on Bold Bite's special World Cup menu, via Bold BiteThe world’s biggest sporting event kicks off next week in Brazil and a number of Bethesda bars and restaurants are taking advantage.

Bold Bite (4901 Fairmont Ave.) is going all out. Owner Alonso Roche’s native Venezuela didn’t qualify, but he hasn’t tempered his excitement.

The eatery known for its hot dogs and breakfast food will offer a World Cup-only menu of four tapas dishes and four montaditos, or tapas-style sandwiches. Bold Bite will carry the opener between Brazil and Croatia at 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 12 and multiple games a day until the group stage ends June 26. (Schedule here)

Union Jack’s (4915 St Elmo Ave.) will have every match on one of its more than 20 TVs — and two projection screens for the big games. The English-themed Woodmont Triangle bar is offering giveaways and $3 Bud and Bud Light bottles during all matches. England’s first match starts at 6 p.m. on June 14 against Italy.

It’s a good bet that some of the folks at Flanagan’s Harp And Fiddle (4844 Cordell Ave.) will be rooting for Italy in that match. The Cordell Avenue bar will show that one and others.

Tommy Joe’s (4714 Montgomery Lane) became a favorite watching spot for Brazil fans during the 2010 competition. Brazil’s comparable time zones will mean no morning matches or early morning drinking this time around. The U.S. will play its last group match at noon on June 26 vs. Germany, which does mean you’ll have to play hooky to see it.

The team’s first two matches are against Ghana at 6 p.m. on June 16, Portugal at 3 p.m. on June 22.
