Bethesda Native Got Ricin Idea From “Breaking Bad” – Daniel Milzman, the 19-year-old Georgetown student charged with making ricin, spent a long weekend with his roommate gone making a lethal amount of the deadly toxin. Federal prosecutors said he got the idea from the TV show and meant harm to others. Milzman’s defense attorney said he is suffering from depression and friends said the sharp and driven Whitman grad was also anxious and felt unfulfilled. A judge ordered Milzman released to an in-patient psychiatric program at Sibley Memorial Hospital. [Washington Post]
Schools Can Get 5 Snow Days Waived – The Maryland State Board of Education on Tuesday decided that school districts can ask for up to five make-up days due to snow be waived. It’s unclear if MCPS, which asked for four days waived, will take the state up on that. It’s also unclear just when the last day of MCPS will be. MCPS asked for four days waived, which would mean extending the school year by just one day to June 13. MCPS asked for the waiver the week before the school system’s 10th snow day, which happened on Monday, March 17. [The Gazette]
Quarry Springs Condo Project Finally Gets Going – A 97-unit luxury condo project on River Road finally got underway this month. The Estate Condominiums at Quarry Springs, on River Road just west of the Beltway and east of Seven Locks Road, was supposed to break ground in the summer of 2011. That never happened, but now new partners have kickstarted the construction. The project’s first 50 units are set to be delivered by fall 2015, the second 47 units are expected to start in 2016. The typical 3,200-square-foot unit will run you about $2.5 million. [Washington Business Journal]
USO To Open Center At Naval Support Activity Bethesda Next Week – The USO will open a 16,000-square-foot Warrior and Family Center Tuesday, April 1 for wounded warriors at Walter Reed Military Medical Center. The facility has been set up just outside of the medical center to give wounded troops, their families and caregivers a place to relax and heal away from the hospital. Government officials, politicians, celebrity chef Robert Irvine and Miss America 2014 Nina Davuluri are expected to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony. [USO]
