When Francoise Carrier steps down in June, Montgomery County will need someone new on the body that oversees the county’s land-use policies and reviews development proposals.
The County Council is now accepting applications for a new Planning Board commissioner. Last month, Carrier told Planning Department employees she will not seek a second term on the Board.
When the Council appoints a new Planning Board member, it will also pick a new chair, either by designating a sitting Board member or the appointee. Commissioners Casey Anderson and Meredith Wellington have both said they are interested in taking over Carrier’s role.
The Planning Board approves all county master plans, function plans, zoning changes, development proposals and offers guidance as to the traffic and land-use implications of county and federal capital projects.
On average, a Planning Board member can expect to spend at least two full days a week in scheduled and informal meetings. Additionally, substantial time is required for preparatory work and other activities related to Planning Board responsibilities. Board members make $30,000 a year.
The chair, which is a full-time position, makes $168,450.

The deadline for applications is 5 p.m. on Monday, April 7. The interviews will be public and could be televised and a financial disclosure — statement of assets, debts, income and family real estate — is required.
The terms are four years, with a limit of two full terms.
